Subaru EJ257 Crate Engines

The Dual AVCS Subaru EJ255/7 Crate Engines are one of our most popular builds.  These range from 2008-2015.  We offer 4 stages of builds, for any application.  All of our builds include all standard blue print machine work, and all new parts.  These are USDM builds, but we can rebuild a supplied JDM core as well.  These builds include new OEM parts along with a mix of upgraded performance parts.   The pricing you see below is for the rebuild (Parts and Labor) only.  We do not offer exchange service on cores, as every core is unique and we unfortunately are not a core supplier.   Freight Pickup Service Offered, simply secure engine to a wood pallet.

Quick Turnaround Crate Engine - Spec Rebuild w/ Upgrades
OEM Shortblock w/ 1 Year Subaru Warranty w/ New OEM Head Castings
Core Required for all timing components, valvetrain, cams, phasers, etc.  These must transfer from your core.

Starting at $7,295 + Bad Core

This engine plan is our best solution for customers who are at the dealership facing a $15,000 bill and want to save a few thousand dollars.  We can arrange core pickup of your old engine, and ship back to you the finished engine fast !  Usually the turn around time for this build with shipping ( during 2020-2021) is only 3 weeks.  Soon, we will have them in stock for even faster turn around.  For now, 3 short weeks is reasonable!

We use a new OEM short block, which saves us time in the machine shop.  These also carry a OEM warranty, which is not offered on any performance rebuild.  New OEM head castings are included, because 90% of the cores have bad cam journals or even worse.   Valve train parts are almost always salvageable, or we replace them with OEM or better when they do not pass inspection or reconditioning.  Timing sprockets are reconditioned or replaced.  Porting adds only 2-5 days to the process, as all custom work needs to be scheduled into the shop.

EJ255

DOHC 16-valve turbo with sodium-filled valves originally designed for North American market, now sees usage in some European Imprezas and Legacies destined for Australia and South Africa. Power 210–265 hp (157–198 kW; 213–269 PS)

EJ255 Version 1: Used in the 2005 and 2006 Legacy, as well as the 2004 and 2005 Forester. This engine uses the same shortblock and heads like EJ257 in US 04-06 STI.[8]

EJ255 Version 2: Used in the 2006-2008 WRX, the 2007+ Legacy, and the 2006+ Forester. This is the newer AIS equipped EJ255, which uses a slightly different AB630 shortblock, as well as the AB820 heads. The only difference in the shortblock of this EJ255 and the 04-06 EJ257 is the pistons. They are of nearly the same construction, but have a slightly larger dish volume. Subaru lists the CR at 8.4:1 vs 8.2:1 for the 04-06 STI engine.

Usage in North America:

  • Impreza (WRX): 2006–2014

  • Forester XT: 2004–2013

  • Legacy GT: 2005–2012
